Richard Petty Driving School is established by Richard Petty in 2007, Richard Petty is a seven-time NASCAR Champion who after his retirement planned the Richard Petty Driving School Program to improve the driving skills of young people ages 15 to 25. As drivers of this age group have higher accident rates than any other age group.
The course designed for a specific age group teaches the techniques of safety on-road and the course content deals with driving and not racing. According to a popular driving school rating website the Richard Petty Driving School program is designed to create situational awareness by placing participants in compromising driving situations in a controlled environment. And the focus of these programs is on crash avoidance, emergency lane change, and tailgating exercises. Accordingly the classes are also designed for the school.
The six-hour safe driving program takes place throughout the summer and the enrolments are booked through the school website or by telephone. The requirements to take up the class are a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. Participants under 18 require parental consent. The course is designed in such a way that it provides situational awareness of the students, participants are placed in challenging, real-life situations.
Classroom instruction is also provided by the school but it alternates with hands-on driving as drivers practice the skills taught in the classroom.
